Preventing mould

Mould growth on dog beds can happen when the warm, humid air inside the dogs mattress meets the cooler floor surface beneath causing condensation to form. The condensation remains trapped and creates a damp environment for mould and mildew to form.  This issue is particularly prevalent on cold flooring materials like stone, slate, or wood floors, though it can also occur on carpeted floors if conditions are favorable. To avoid this:

Air the bed regularly
Keep the bed in an area of the home with lots of sunlight (sun kills mould spores)
When the bed is not being used, raise it off the floor, or propped on its side 

Our foams are treated with Ultrafresh, however while this is effective it cannot be used as a single defence against persistantly damp environments.

No matter what type of dog bed you have it should be regularly aired off the ground and ideally in the sun at least twice a month. This helps to keep your home fresh and your pet healthy between washes. It will also reduce the frequency for washing fillings.

First remove all covers and give them a good shake or brush before washing them, or hanging them on the washing line to air.

Take all pieces of the bed including inserts and foam mattresses and elevate off the ground ideally on a clothes airer so that air can circulate around freely.

Make sure all pieces of the bed are completely dry before reassembly.

Washability: We do not recommend washing your Hugzzz filling unless absolutely necessary*. Your Hugzzz inserts should instead be regularly aired to help keep them fresh. *Should your pet have an accident where the filling has been affected, we recommend washing only the affected insert following the instructions below.

Gentle hand wash (recommended) OR machine wash the affected insert separately on a gentle cycle at 40c or lower using a mild detergent. An additional spin cycle will be required to remove as much water as possible.  Gently squeeze excess moisture from foam and tumble dry on cool. Lay flat in sun and allow to dry completely turning the insert at intervals for even drying.

Please note memory foam will absorb water therefore it will take a long time to dry.

ALLOW ALL PARTS TO DRY FULLY BEFORE REASSAMBLING BED

As with any foam, if it is not fully dry before assembling mould can occur.

We recommend airing the inner cushions of your Hugzzz Ortho Curl Up Cloud regularly by taking the cover off and giving them a good shake and massage. Sit them on an elevated clothes airer in the sun to keep the bed fresh and to allow air to circulate throughout.

Retaining Fluffiness and Loft
Like our own pillows, they can lose their loft over time. Wash the insert (with fill inside). Cool or low heat tumble dry with a tennis ball (if you have one) inside the dryer will help plump it up.

Our bed frames can be cleaned using lukewarm water and a mild detergent. Firstly, use a brush to remove encrusted dirt, then wipe down using the detergent and rinse off thoroughly with lukewarm water. Dry in the sun.
Avoid direct contact with dissimilar metals, such as brass and copper, particularly in corrosive environments. Don’t over-clean your steel frame and avoid abrasive washing as this will wash away its protective barrier and may reduce the life of your product.
If your frame is situated in a highly corrosive environment e.g., in a coastal location, we recommend rinsing it with potable water on a regular basis. You should avoid long term storage of your frame in damp or poorly ventilated areas, the best location for the frame is somewhere dry and well ventilated.

Simply hose down the cover, and if required you can use lukewarm water and a mild detergent to scrub off any encrusted dirt, please rinse thoroughly. Dry in the sun. This cover will withstand the harshest environments even when exposed to moisture and the elements. Made from natural fibres, it does have a natural stretch. If you find it has stretched too much some time in the sun will return its shape.

Installing the Cover

The covers are initially quite tight, made to avoid sagging when your fur-baby sleeps on the bed, so a little trick is to spray or wipe pet-safe olive oil on the bedframe, which helps the covers slide into place much easier.

The Heavy Duty covers are coated in a PVC coating to make them strong and this sometimes becomes stiff and possibly shrinks a little in colder weather, making the cover even tighter. If the cover is still difficult to slide onto the frame, give this a try:

Soak or dip the cover in warm water (with the Velcro out of the water if you don’t want to get the tabs wet) for about 3-5 mins. This will soften the cover and make it easier and more flexible to get onto the frame (the olive oil on the frames helps too).

Our buckets and bowls are made from certified food-grade stainless steel and are dishwasher safe. If cleaning by hand avoid scratching the surface using a scrubber – use a sponge or soft cloth and washing up liquid to remove any stains. To sanitise soak the product in a bowl of vinegar and warm water solution or bleach and cold water. Rinse thoroughly with cold water and dry.
